I initially gave this app 5 stars. I have owned it since 2010, so I have DEFINITELY gotten my money’s worth out of it!
Best feature is that you can choose a “winding roads” option for a scenic drive. GREAT FOR MOTORCYCLES! Yes, occasionally the TomTom app will put you on a dirt road, but that’s usually because PART of the road is paved. The app can’t tell the difference.
Great user interface which became customizable with updates. Loved the Google Search, but it was discontinued years ago. My recommendation is to find places you want to go using Google maps or Apple Maps, and then save the location as a “contact.” That way you can search for it in “People > Contacts” and set this GPS to leading you to it.
You can add up to five waypoints in your navigation and this will help you to create a specific route.
The best thing is that you can download the app, which contains all the maps, and you DON’T NEED A CELL PHONE PLAN ON THE CELL PHONE YOU USE IT WITH. I use this app on an ancient iPhone4 on my motorcycle and it is fantastic! You just have to rely on “contacts” to program in addresses. If you try to just paste an address into the “use copied address” function, it won’t work.
DO NOT BOTHER WITH THE NEW “FREE” TomTom Go app. Horrible reviews, you can only go 50 miles in a given time period, and then they want to whack you with a monthly charge to continue using the app. Just buy the actual pricey app and use it for years as I have. Also, you can use the one-time $40 (or so) app on multiple devices. You cannot do that with the new “free” (but kill you with fees) TomTom Go app: it is limited to a single device.
This is a great one-person app. Unfortunately it does not generate or read .gpx files. For that you’ll need an stand-alone GPS unit and there are many to choose from (Garmin, TomTom, Magellan). Read reviews carefully. I haven’t bought the TomTom stand-alone GPS unit due to years of complains of inability to download map updates despite being entitled to them through the purchase.
